Martin Garrix

Used to Love

with Dean Lewis

Martin Garrix teamed up with Australian singer-songwriter Dean Lewis for the first time on Used to Love. The song was written during an unusual moment: Martin and songwriter Albin Nedler started working on it while Martin was recovering in hospital, with Dean joining the session via FaceTime.

The song was recorded in Amsterdam in June 2019 and officially released on October 31, 2019. At the time, Martin described Used To Love as a very personal record, created during a quieter period of his life, away from touring and shows.

Musically, Used To Love leans more toward pop than pure EDM, following the emotional direction of tracks like In the Name of Love, Ocean or No Sleep. Still, the song keeps a strong Martin Garrix signature, including a powerful and emotional drop that connects perfectly with Dean Lewis’ expressive vocals.

In November 2019, Martin and Dean released an acoustic version of Used To Love, featuring stripped-down instrumentation with guitar, strings and reworked vocals. This version highlighted the songwriting and emotional core of the track, offering a more intimate take on the original release.

“THIS TRACK WAS MADE DURING MY BREAK WHILE I WAS RECOVERING FROM MY ANKLE INJURY. DEAN AND I ARE SUPER EXCITED TO SHARE IT WITH THE WORLD”

Lyrics

Written by Albin Nedler, Dean Lewis, Kristoffer Fogelmark, Martin Garrix.

Walking through the door of this old and lonely
Place that used to feel like us
Remembering the only thing that made me
Feel like I was worth the love

We used to hold hands, now I dance alone
We had Springsteen playing so loud
We danced in the dark ’til it felt like home
With you, home was anywhere

But you will never be left behind
Give me a moment, I need just a little more time
If I could, I would have made things right
But we can’t go back to the way that we used to love

Never apart you’re still running through my blood
But we can’t go back to the way that we used to love
But we can’t go back to the way that we used to love
We can’t go back to the way that we used to

Be talking through the night, you laying by my side
You were always there to heal my scars
And into the dawn I do my best to try and find some sleep
But you still keep me up

We used to hold hands, now I dance alone
We had Springsteen playing so loud
We danced in the dark ’til it felt like home
With you, home was anywhere

But you will never be left behind
Give me a moment, I need just a little more time
If I could, I would have made things right
But we can’t go back to the way that we used to love
Never apart you’re still running through my blood
But we can’t go back to the way that we used to love
We can’t go back to the way that we used to

But I can’t escape, you’re still in my head
I’m running from, I’m running from the emptiness
But I can’t escape, you’re still in my head
I’m running from, I’m running from the emptiness
But I can’t escape, you’re still in my head
I’m running from, I’m running from the emptiness
But I can’t escape, you’re still in my head
I’m running from, I’m running from the emptiness
We can’t go back to the way that we used to love
