After discovering Mike Yung through YouTube videos of him singing in the New York City subway, Martin Garrix invited him to Amsterdam in April 2018.
Earlier that year, Mike had lost his wife, Lydia. Together, they decided to write an uplifting song about hope, perseverance, and chasing your dreams. “Something to Believe,” eventually became “Dreamer.”
In August 2018, Mike returned to Amsterdam to record the song at Martin’s newly built professional studio. The ZO! Gospel Choir joined the session, adding powerful vocal layers. Blending elements of R&B, gospel, and subtle blues influences, “Dreamer” showcased a completely different side of Martin’s sound, surprising fans once again. Mike Yung said, “This guy could work with anyone. Why he chose to work with a 60-year-old like me was always confusing. Martin, thank you for the opportunity. I love you, man.”
“Dreamer” was released on November 1, 2018. The official music video, documenting their journey and collaboration, premiered the same day. Martin and Mike wrote several additional songs together during their sessions, hinting at more music to come.
“He’s an amazing singer. I saw him in a video singing in the New York subway. He had been performing there for 38 years. I invited him to Amsterdam, we had an amazing week, and we even wrote music on a boat with a guitar.”
