Martin Garrix
Animals
Released on June 17, 2013, “Animals” was already dominating dance floors before it officially dropped. The track had been tested in clubs and festivals earlier that year, gaining strong support from major DJs and building serious anticipation. Once released, it immediately reached #1 on the Beatport Top 100, becoming one of the best-selling electronic tracks of 2013.
The impact quickly moved beyond the EDM scene. In October 2013, “Animals” reached #1 on the UK Singles Chart, making Martin Garrix the youngest solo artist ever to top the UK chart at the time. The track also hit #1 in Belgium and
Australia, topped the UK Dance Chart, entered the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States, and reached #1 on the Billboard Dance Club Songs chart. It went on to receive multiple platinum certifications in several countries, including
the US and Australia.
Built around a minimalist structure and a powerful instrumental drop, “Animals” broke mainstream conventions. There is no traditional vocal hook, only a processed chant-like vocal sample that became one of the most recognizable sounds
of the decade. The record proved that a raw, drop-driven big-room track could cross over into global pop charts without adapting to radio standards.
The official music video, filmed in London and featuring scenes in the London Underground, has accumulated hundreds of millions of views on YouTube. At the same time, Martin’s profile exploded. By August 2013, just weeks after release,
his Facebook page surpassed 100,000 fans. International bookings surged, festival appearances multiplied, and the name Martin Garrix became known worldwide.
“Animals” remains the breakthrough record that redefined his career and stands as one of the defining electronic tracks of the 2010s.
