In Interview with
JEX
Garrixers.com had the pleasure of chatting with Jex, and we’re thrilled to share it with you. Here’s our exclusive interview!
Garrixers.com : Hey Jex! You have 7 million listeners a year on Spotify, but for those who don’t know you, could you introduce yourself in a few words?
Jex Jordan : Hi, I’m Jex! I’m a dog mom, songwriter, and an artist who’s figuring it out as I go 🙂
In July, you shared a video of yourself performing an acoustic version of “Told You So,” asking for a DJ to collaborate on it. How did your connection with Martin Garrix come about?
Quite a few people ended up sending Martin the hook. One morning I woke up to a FaceTime from a friend of mine in the industry. I rolled outta of bed and answered the phone (looking like absolute garbage) and bam… it was Martin. He told me he loved the hook and wanted to get to work!
What’s the background of “Told You So” before your collaboration with Martin? Did you have someone in mind for it, or was it intended as an acoustic piece?
There was no plan, honestly. I wrote the hook one afternoon in my apartment, and decided to throw it online to see if anyone liked it.
In October, you performed live for the first time at ADE, and we loved it! How did it feel? Did you enjoy the experience?
Thank you so much! It was a whirlwind. I’m such a studio hermit so the live stuff was quite intimidating. Martin and his team were great, though. He didn’t bat an eye when I told him about my lack of experience, and trusted me more than I trusted myself..ha. There’s definitely things I would’ve done differently, but I’m learning as I go!
Was it your first time in Amsterdam? What did you think of the city?
I believe it was my 4th time. I absolutely adore Amsterdam, it’s a very lovely place.
You seem so comfortable with piano and vocals—did you attend any special training or music school?
I began playing piano when I was about 10 years old, and started a bit of classical training in high school. Just now starting to get serious about vocal training! I actually was in college studying music for a year and dropped out.. figured the best way to learn isn’t to sit behind a desk, it’s to go do it.
Who are your musical and artistic influences?
Oh, so many! Lady Gaga, Amy Winehouse, Sia & Elton John to name a few.
Are there any other artists you’d like to collaborate with in the future?
Absolutely! There are many amazing artists I’d love to collab with. We’ll see what the new year brings!
To get to know you more, what are some of your hobbies and interests?
My dog Boots is my world, she is my sweet foster fail, and when I’m not working I am spending time with her. Music takes a majority of my time, even when I just play for fun. Been really into keytar lately.. get lost in it for hours!
What’s next for you?
Honestly, I don’t know. One thing I will forever be grateful to Martin for is taking a chance on me as a smaller artist. He’s truly changed my life…and the things that I write now have been reaching a broader audience, which is so exciting. At the end of the day, whatever I do next will be authentic, and art that I love.
